The weak society: Faá¸lallÄhâs social criticism
Faá¸lallÄhâs contention is that a weak society lacks social coherence. The absence of common beliefs, obligations, and responsibilities exerts a centrifugal force leading to destruction. He explains the weak society by describing the Jewish community at the birth of Islam as follows:
[The Jews of Medina] had conflicting personal interests that made each faction or even each person an independent entity whose interests and goals conflicted with those of the others in the communityâ¦. [The] difference in feelings, inclinations and orientations that turns into differing plans, actions, stances⦠is in fact internal fragmentation that evolves into an external one.13
